University of Kanjuruhan Malang History
The idea of establishing the PGRI Teachers Training and Education college of East Java came from a brilliant man named Abdul Radjab (the late). The aim of establishing the college was to improve the teachers’ skill and education where many teachers in the era didn’t have opportunity to continue their study and/or to get scholarship from the government to university level. Since the Independence day of Indonesia to 1960s the Indonesian government gave scholarship for teachers in very limited number.
That is why Mr. Abdul Radjab and some others brilliant figures started opening PGRI College special for teachers. This great idea was then realized in 1957 by opening B1 Course (3 years program) and teacher training. Then, after B1 ran for some years and resulted many scholar through state examination, the college was named FKIP PGRI of Malang. After the establishment of Indonesian president decree number 1 in 1963 about university education integration, then FKIP PGRI Malang changed the name became IKIP PGRI Malang.
In line with the education development in the era, more and more teachers wanted to get higher education. To fulfill their idea then IKIP PGRI of Malang open some Extension Course in some regions of East Java, namely
– Center I : Malang—IKIP of Malang curricular oriented
– Center II : Surabaya—IKIP of Surabaya curricular oriented
– Center III : Madiun—IKIP of Malang and IKIP of Surabaya curricular oriented.
In fact, the fast growth of IKIP PGRI was not last longer. This was influenced by Indonesian dynamic politic situation that was a disadvantage for PGRI. Practically IKIP PGRI collapsed in 1966.
IKIP PGRI of Malang Rebirth
After about 9.5 years vacuum of teaching and learning activities, upon initiatives of the members of PGRI Branch Malang in the era—Drs. H. Soenarto Dd. SH., M.Si., Drs. H. Muhammad Amir Soetedjo, SH., M.Pd., and Dr. Hadi Sriwiyana, MM., reestablished IKIP PGRI under Mr. Abdul Radjab advisory and on May 20, 1975 they declared the Rebirth of IKIP PGRI of Malang where this institute was the embryo of what is so called University of Kanjuruhan Malang now. Then the Indonesian government obliged all colleges, universities or institutes to have their own founding father foundation located in the same place where the teaching and learning process take place. To fulfill this requirement then in 1985 IKIP PGRI was fully established where Mr. Drs. Soenarto Dd. SH. M.Si was the first rector. Mr. Drs. Soedarsono was chosen as the academic consultant but because he had to move to Jakarta then Mr. Drs. F.I. Sukarman M.Pd., replaced him and responsible for the position. In this era Mr. Drs. H. Muhammad Amir Soetedjo was elected as vice rector and Mr. Dr. H. Hadi Sriwiyana, MM as the dean of Economic Faculty.
The principles of IKIP PGRI of Malang management were:
– Cooperative, collective, and spirit of brotherhood based on state private partnership.
– Innovative, flexible and hardworking.
– Obey all regulations of Indonesian government.
University of Kanjuruhan Malang
University of Kanjuruhan Malang were a merger between two colleges namely IKIP PGRI of Malang and STIBA Kanjuruhan of Malang where both colleges under the same Foundation (YPLP PT-PGRI). This foundation then changed its name become PPLP PT PGRI based on Indonesian National Education ministry decree number 106/D/O/072001, where those two colleges merged into University of Kanjuruhan Malang.
Now, University of Kanjuruhan Malang endlessly increases the number of facilities both physically and non-physically, internally and externally to improve the speed of learning process. Internally, University of Kanjuruhan Malang creates conducive and professional education atmosphere by establishing new buildings, offices and modern classrooms, representative and computerized library, by giving scholarship for lecturers to have higher education. Externally, University of Kanjuruhan Malang builds beneficial partnership with many institutions both state and private owned institutions such as manufacturing industries, banks, hotel s etc.
After succeed to merge two colleges into University of Kanjuruhan Malang, the next goal is to be a leading university in the nation by creating great programs aimed to give University of Kanjuruhan Malang’s students sufficient skills to face the globalization challenges such as entrepreneurship and e-learning.
